What is Green Building in Malaysia?

A Green Building refers to a building that is designed, constructed, and operated in an environmentally responsible and resource-efficient manner throughout its lifecycle. The concept focuses on reducing the building’s impact on the environment while enhancing the health and comfort of its occupants. The goal is to create buildings that are not only energy-efficient but also use sustainable materials, optimize water usage, and improve indoor air quality, among other benefits.

Green Building Index (GBI) is the primary certification for green buildings, which is similar to other international standards like LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design). The GBI was introduced by the Pertubuhan Akitek Malaysia (PAM) and the Association of Consulting Engineers Malaysia (ACEM) and has become the leading rating system for assessing the environmental performance of buildings in the country.

  • Energy Efficiency: Utilizing energy-efficient systems such as LED lighting, solar panels, and high-performance insulation to reduce the building’s energy consumption.
  • Water Conservation: Implementing rainwater harvesting systems, low-flow fixtures, and water-efficient landscaping to minimize water usage.
  • Sustainable Materials: Use of locally sourced or recycled materials to reduce the carbon footprint of the building.
  • Indoor Environmental Quality: Ensuring good indoor air quality with proper ventilation, natural lighting, and the use of non-toxic building materials.
  • Waste Management: Effective strategies to minimize waste generation and encourage recycling during construction and throughout the building’s operation.
  • Land Use and Ecology: Considering the ecological impact of the building and its site, including preserving green spaces and reducing urban heat islands.
